Utilizing Advances in the Catalytic Converter Recycling Process

Global Refining Group has moved far beyond the outdated decanning process, which has proven to be a time consuming and expensive manual shearing procedure. Decanning is often referred to as an open or closed system and is still used by other companies in the industry today. Overall, this process is simply not able to extract and retain the full content of PGM from the converter shell casings. Costs associated with the older method of manual shearing include labor costs, machinery repair costs and profit loss from dispelled material. In addition a percentage of the catalyst material is released into the air, stuck to the machinery blades, left over on the facility floors and not completely expelled from the catalyst cans by negligent employees.

Accurate Assay Analysis and Smelting

Global Refining Group acquired the former Multimetco facility in Anniston, Alabama in December 2025. Every facility and project we undertake is held to Global’s standards of quality, efficiency, and industry excellence. Since the acquisition, we have partnered with leading international consultants and industry professionals to thoroughly upgrade the site, refine existing systems, implement rigorous and accurate sampling and laboratory methodologies, and build a team of experienced professionals known for both technical expertise and integrity.

In 2026, we conducted thousands of tests, assays, and samples on Global’s own materials of known value, cross-verifying results to ensure the laboratory’s accuracy and reliability. These results were further validated through independent laboratory confirmation. Accuracy is fundamental not only to our suppliers’ confidence but to the long-term strength of our business. Our primary focus remains building the reputation of this facility on processes that are accurate, verifiable, and transparent—standards we continue to uphold through dual-site assay verification across our operations.
